Design

BIRDIE

Great mix of holes, with no two being all that similar and repititious. For first time players, there’s a sense of anticipation about what’s next.

Some short par 4s and true par 5s force you to make some strategic decisions. But the par 3s are truly stunning.

Unlike some courses who trick out their greens too much, these greens are characterized by distinct tiers and subtle undulations.

Playability

BIRDIE

Firm, fast, but fair. Relatively wide open fairways, but you can run your tee shots through if you are not careful.

Make no mistake, this is a tough course that demands good golf shots - and the degree of difficulty can change minute to minute depending on the severity of the ever-present wind.

But, unlike some of the other public “monsters” in Massachusetts, Farm Neck feels a bit more fair to higher handicappers. Sure, there are some penalizing misses, but there felt to be more bail out areas that at least allowed a chance of recovery.

Farm Neck is relatively flat. You could walk it, but the volume of play makes this a mostly riding course.

Views

EAGLE

The ocean is clearly visible on multiple holes.

While the ocean views are stunning, the inland holes present some stunning marsh and woodland visuals as well.

The ocean reveal when you turn the corner from 2 green to 3 tee is magical.

Overall, we have to say that the ocean views are second only to Eastward Ho! Certainly Farm Neck has the best views of any Cape Cod and Islands public course.

Vibe

BIRDIE

There’s definitely a “where am I?” vibe.

Is this course really public? It truly feels like a private course from the gates to the post-round restaurant/bar. (Granted, it is semi-private.)

Am I on the East Coast? Many of the ocean visuals make you think you are on the coast of California. Obviously, not quite as dramatic as Pebble or Torrey, but probably as close as we get here in Massachusetts.

Condition

EAGLE

From driving range to tee to green, the conditions were as good as some private courses.

Practice Areas

EAGLE

Huge driving range with lots of targets, with a bucket of balls included in the greens fee.

Large putting green. Our only quibble is that the putting green did not quite match the undulations and speeds we saw out on the course.

Nice bunker and chipping areas as well as a separate range area for lessons.

19th Hole

BIRDIE

Classy bar and restaurant with multiple patio options overlooking the first tee.

The mix of golfers and Vineyarder restaurant regulars adds to the private course vibe where you feel like you need to be on your best behavior.

Logo

BIRDIE

Strong logo that conveys the vibe of the course: classic, classy, and something a bit different than everything else.

Memorability

BIRDIE

Farm Neck may be the most underrated public course in the state. Rarely is it mentioned with the other public course, private feel “big boys” like Red Tail, Pinehills, or Granite Links. But, we think it totally deserves to be in the conversation.

Like these other courses, Farm Neck commands a relatively high greens fee. Combined with the cost of getting to Martha’s Vineyard, a round at Farm Neck will certainly be an expensive day, but we think this experience is worth the expense.

You will not forget Farm Neck and will likely make visiting it a yearly tradition.
