Design
BIRDIE
Marion Golf Course is a classic New England nine-holer that leans heavily on its old-school, minimalist design. Originally laid out in 1904 by renowned course architect George Thomas (yes, the same George Thomas who designed Riveria!), the course sticks to the fundamentals—small greens, tight fairways, and a subtle yet effective use of natural terrain.
Thomas, known for his work on challenging, strategic layouts, designed Marion with an emphasis on shot placement over power.
What truly sets Marion apart is its iconic rock walls, which frame several fairways and greens, adding both beauty and strategic intrigue. These natural hazards force players to think their way around the course, and they reinforce the course’s historic, rugged charm.
Recently, the course has come under new ownership, which has led to some thoughtful improvements while preserving its classic character. The new owners have made subtle updates to enhance playability without losing the old-school charm that has made Marion a local favorite for generations.
Playability
BIRDIE
This is the definition of a friendly walking course. With minimal forced carries and manageable rough, it’s perfect for beginners and casual golfers while still offering enough intrigue for seasoned players.
The rock walls come into play in multiple spots, sometimes acting as backstops, other times creating tricky recovery situations. The greens are small but tricky, rewarding those with a sharp short game. It’s not a bomb-and-gouge type of place—placement is key.
Views
PAR
Tucked away near Sippican Harbor, Marion Golf Course has a peaceful, old-school Cape Cod charm. The stone walls winding through the course give it a timeless, pastoral New England feel, adding character to an already scenic layout.
There’s a peekaboo view of the harbor that we’re hoping gets opened up someday to reveal more of the view…
While it lacks dramatic coastal views, the rolling fairways, towering trees, and historic setting make for a picturesque round.
Vibe
EAGLE
Marion Golf Course is pure, laid-back golf. No dress codes, no pretense—just grab your clubs and go. The unassuming, welcoming atmosphere makes it feel like a throwback to a simpler time in golf. The rock walls add to the feeling that you’re playing on a course that has been here forever, untouched by modern overdesign. It’s a local favorite for a reason.
Condition
BOGEY
It’s not Augusta, and it doesn’t try to be. The fairways can be a little scruffy, and the greens aren’t lightning-fast, but for a municipal course with affordable rates, it’s maintained well enough. Expect some uneven lies, a few patchy spots, and the occasional unpredictable bounce off a rock wall, but that’s part of the charm.
Practice Areas
DOUBLE BOGEY
There’s not much here in terms of practice facilities—no driving range, just a small putting green. But let’s be honest, this is a “show up and play” kind of place.
19th Hole
BOGEY
While the on-site options are limited, the course’s casual, old-school charm makes it the kind of place where grabbing a beer and unwinding in the parking lot with friends feels just as fitting.
Logo
BIRDIE
Marion’s logo is simple yet distinctive, featuring a rose as a central element. The rose is a direct nod to George Thomas’ love of roses.
Memorability
BIRDIE
Marion Golf Course is a charming, no-frills New England gem. It’s short, quirky, and perfect for a relaxed round with friends.
With George Thomas’s design still at its core and thoughtful updates from new ownership, it offers a blend of tradition and modern comfort that’s hard to beat.
The small, tricky greens and casual atmosphere make it a unique experience, and the walls add an old-world element rarely seen in public courses.
You’ll likely leave with a story about a lucky (or unlucky) bounce off the stone.
