Jones Course

Pinehills is not just a clever nickname.

Pinehills is not just a clever nickname: be ready for some wild hilly terrain among hundreds of acres of thick pine trees.

Both the Nicklaus and Jones course should be in every discussion of best public course in Massachusetts - not just the Cape Cod area.

Like the Nicklaus course, unique, demanding holes at every turn.

A re-routing in early 2020 has been received with high praise. If you haven’t played it recently, you’ll want to play it again.

Playability

PAR

There's lots of debate over which course is harder - the Nicklaus or the Jones. We feel like the Jones course seems a bit narrower, with smaller targets, thus a tiny bit less playable for the average player than the Nicklaus design.

Lower handicappers we've spoken to tend to prefer the challenge of Jones slightly. (But really, it is so close…)

If you are in doubt, tee it forward. There are some substantial carries from the Blues and Blacks.

Not walkable at all. Some tees are a considerable distance from the previous green.

As the season progresses, the fescue gets longer and makes for some additional punishing landing spots late in the season.

Greens are firm and fast, but the putts do not break as much as they look!

Views

BIRDIE

Massive elevation changes allow for expansive treetop views.

Because each hole is carved out of the pine forest, each hole feels like its own distinct experience.

This should help force you to focus on the challenge in front of you.

You will rarely see other golfers on the course, even on the busiest of days.

Vibe

EAGLE

The mission of the course is to make you feel like a "member for a day" and the vibe is certainly one of a private course.

But, like being a guest at a private course, the vibe can be a bit intimidating.

Maybe the most professionally run course in our list. The Pinehills staff has the visitor and playing experience down to a science.
