Southers Marsh Golf Club

The cranberry guys created such a refreshing and sweet (not sour), unique golf experience.

Design

BIRDIE

This is an executive course that tips out at 4111 yards, but make no mistake, these are 18 real holes.

It took amazing vision to see a course among the cranberry bogs. Really impressive routing that maximizes a small and ultra-challenging space.

There are 11 par 3s and 7 par 4s.

Playability

BIRDIE

The executive course is rare in MA, but it can provide a nice respite from some of the 7000 yard monsters out there.

This is a great track to work on your irons, but don’t leave your driver in the trunk - there are some good par 4s too.

There are lots of forced carries over the cranberry bogs. This challenge is probably more mental than physical.

You can certainly ride, but we highly recommend walking.

Views

BIRDIE

Views are a mix of wide open vistas and several isolated tree-lined holes.

From the moment you drive into the lot, you’ll be struck by the unique colors of cranberry bogs and lush fairways. The red and greens present something that just looks different from what most people think of as typical.

Vibe

EAGLE

One of our favorite overall vibes. Finally a course that prioritizes fun and doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

The quirky and fun experience starts with their commercials and continues throughout the playing experience.

Beyond the atypical feel that the cranberry bogs bring, the staff pays exceptional attention to the little things. When you check in, they give you free ball markers and a divot tool.

We couldn’t help but notice the friendliness of the staff. To a person, everyone we encountered greeted us with a smile and a hello. It may seem simple, but this is rare in the public course game. And we certainly appreciated it.

Condition

PAR

Solid. We played late in the season for a December bonus round and the course played like it was early spring. No complaints.

Greens: a bit inconsistent - some fast, some a bit on the slow side. (But to be fair, it was December! We’ll be back in the Summer.)

Practice Areas

EAGLE

At first the glance, practice area looks limited and unimpressive: there’s a small putting green beside the first tee and five or six hitting bays into a mid-sized range.

However, the addition of The Barn - indoor, heated hitting bays complete with virtual simulation tracking is amazing. The bays open up to the actual range, so this isn’t a completely indoor simulator. Rather, it is the closest thing to an outdoor Top Golf experience that we have in the area.

While the course closes when the weather gets too bad in the Winter, The Barn gives players the opportunity to keep their games fresh throughout the entire year!

19th Hole

PAR

There’s a nice, but small patio with an on-site restaurant overlooking the 1st tee and 18th hole.

Logo

BOGEY

It’s a cranberry on a tee, instead of a golf ball.

It’s perfectly fine, but we can’t help but think something a little more modern and fun might be a little more on-brand with the overall Southers Marsh vibe.

Memorability

EAGLE

It’s almost like Southers Marsh belongs in its own category.

There’s nothing quite like it. It’s not just because it is an executive course. The unique views, the challenging holes, and overall quirky and fun vibe make this something you will not forget.

Don’t get bogged down with the fact that there are no par 5s or that this is only a par 61, there’s something different and refreshing happening here. You must play this course.
